Steinbeck Country

I grew up about an hour north of Monterey and Salinas, or what sometimes is referred to as Steinbeck Country. Salinas always seemed kind of dull from the just looking at it when I was younger, I always had to go there for the most random reasons and remember always being bored. Being mostly lettuce fields and other produce being grown. But recently this area has brought up a certain homesick after watching East of Eden, because it is one of the areas of California with such history and culture to it. And right on the other side of the mountains in Monterey, which has a beautiful bay, and part of the amazing coastline that I was lucky enough to hang out around a lot of my life. Plus the food is so fresh around there, some of my favorite Mexican food in California I ate in Monterey. I can not wait to go back.

Could GaGa do this?

I watched this after waking up at like 5 am the other morning, after not seeing it for like years. It gave me chills, or maybe I was just really stoned. To think this was live, and she knew she didn't have to sound just like the recorded version. She could sing it exactly how she wanted.

B-Side

Freddie Mercury is a person I admire very much and Queen is one of my favorite bands, this is one of my favorite songs, although not sung by Freddie, but by Brian May. Goes to show how amazing Queen was as a collective.

Witches Sabbath

Goya, from the Black Paintings years of his life. One of my favorites. As my friend Alene(who has the goat tattooed on her) put it "he was such a hag hag"

But luckily last night I did an interview with the amazing and charming Cody Critcheloe of Ssion who reminded me that there are a lot of amazing fags who do like good music and are doing tons of amazing things!

LOLA FLORES

Flores was born in Jerez de la Frontera, Cadiz, Spain. Although she was only part Romani, she strongly identified with the Romani culture. She became a famous dancer and singer of Andalusian Romani folklore at a very young age, featuring in films from 1939 to 1987. Her greatest success was in folklore shows with Manolo Caracol, who was her artistic partner until 1951.

Lola Flores died of breast cancer in 1995, aged 72, and was interred in the Cementerio de la Almudena in Madrid. The statue above is of her, erected in her hometown of Jerez de la Frontera.

Spring/Summer Anthems part 1

This song makes me miss my friends from back home and the video actually makes me miss San Jose, especially in warm weather. Sourpatch is a band full of the nicest kids you will ever meet and making amazing songs about such things as party of five and reminding me of summers in the bay.

When I lived in San Francisco for about a year I lived in the Mission with my best friend Sylvia, both of us underage with the worst fake ID's used to frequent the now shut down bar La Rondalla, famous for serving underage kids and $13 pitchers of margaritas. We got to know the patrons, the bee-hived hair waitresses, and the amazingly talented bar tender. This became out anthem of the time we lived together, from either dancing in the bar or running back and forth in each others room doing shots. Pictured below; said best friend.

I first heard this song on my January trip to LA/SD/TJ in my friends car in San Diego on a mix he got as a present. I was blown away, as I expressed that, he broke the news to me to Jay Reatard passed away a 2 days before. I was lucky enough to see him preform in Baltimore in October at one of the best shows I ever been to with Hunx and His Punx and Nobunny. It was warm in LA/SD/TJ on that trip and the song just fit my mood. When I returned to Philadelphia I still listened to the song but knew it was more suitable for the warmth, beaches, and adventure I had when I first heard it.

Jeff The Brotherhood came out with this song last summer, but I wasn't hip to it until this past winter, the whole LP blew me away, even more was their live performance.

There is no video for this Death song, but their should be. I just discovered this gem this morning while getting ready thanks to my friend Sonrisa and this song is what inspired me to compile a list and once I am all settled into my new place make a mixtape.

Other recommendations sans video
Broken Water-Heal/Memory, saw them on Tuesday and even though the vocals were a little fucked up, due to PA or mics, but I still really enjoyed them. Their recordings are amazing.

I will be posting more songs I will add to the mix, and try to make some tapes to send out this spring/summer!

Warm Weather as a Form of Resistance

I am ready for whatever the warm weather brings.

By the end of his career, Roberts had taken over 50,000 photographs of nearly 200 models, many of them friends and lovers." via feuilleton

Starting Over

Spring is rebirth. To do so, you must give something up.

Reading other blogs I stumbled across a post from http://themsfitz.blogspot.com/ of a picture of the original Wicker Man. A classic and favorite of mine.

BLUE

IN AN AMAZING TRADITION OF FEMALE SINGERS

I have the early demo's of Nobody's Daughter, and I really liked them, so of the stuff I heard since the revival of "Hole" hasn't impressed me, especially the re-done version of Samantha. I really didn't want to sound snobby or pretentious in this post but too late. I just hope she keeps the Bob Dylan/Fleetwood Mac sound she had going on the demos, just because she is using the name "Hole" I hope she doesn't trying to make it punk/poppy. Besides all that I think the cover is AMAZING
